A word from our host...
This podcast was conceived and launched in the months and days surrounding my 40th birthday. Like many recently-turned 40-year-olds, I often find myself reflecting on the path behind and the road ahead.
While I’ve had my share of successes over the years, there are also a few pieces of “unfinished business” that I can’t get off my mind.
Ten years ago, I started a company. To date, we’ve raised over $90 million and helped pioneer Virtual Reality as a new and powerful tool for workforce development in the enterprise. Along the way, we’ve hit some pretty cool milestones that many tech startups can only dream of. That said, there’s one “big” one that we haven’t yet achieved… an exit.
In Silicon Valley, not getting an exit is almost synonymous with failure. While that’s not quite my own mindset, I’d be lying if I said that it isn’t something I’ve been dreaming of since the beginning of the journey. While that day hasn’t yet come, I’m still holding fast to the belief that it will.
Am I delusional? Maybe.
But that’s only half the story.
Fifteen years ago, I began a different kind of pursuit, in a totally different world, with just as much experience as I had when I started a company (which was “none”)… trying to qualify for the U.S. Open. Not as a current or former professional golfer. Not as a former college or high school standout. Just as a guy with a decent swing, a dream, and a stubborn belief in long shots. Thousands of golfers try each year. Only a few make it. Why not me?
Two big, audacious dreams, running in parallel. One of these “impossible” achievements is hard enough… but two?
Yes, maybe I'm a bit delusional.
But aren’t most people who achieve something great at least a little delusional? After all, if I don’t believe that achieving the “impossible” is actually… possible… then who will?
